Garphyttan Guide: Choosing the Right Clothes for Summer Hiking

Summer hiking is an activity that attracts many nature enthusiasts and has, in recent years, become a popular vacation activity not only for seasoned adventurers but also for the average Swedish individual. This article will guide you through the best clothing choices and provide you with tips to maximize your comfort during summer hiking.

1. Choose the Right Material

When it comes to summer hiking, the choice of clothing material is crucial to keep you cool and comfortable. A primary rule to follow is to avoid cotton as the base layer. Cotton becomes wet when you sweat, and it dries slowly, which can make you cold and uncomfortable during the hike. Additionally, damp clothing can contribute to chafing, a hiker's worst enemy.

Instead, opt for clothing made of materials such as merino wool, bamboo, or synthetics. However, cotton can work well as a mid-layer or as a component in an outer garment. Similarly, polyester, a synthetic material that does not retain moisture within the fiber, provides excellent moisture-wicking properties.

2. Dress According to the Layering Principle

When embarking on a hike, dressing appropriately is crucial. Something that we at Garphyttan advocate for all types of outdoor activities is the layering principle. Dressing in layers is a fundamental rule when it comes to hiking and outdoor life in general. It is a model that simply describes the different layers of clothing we use, their various properties, and the functions they fulfill. Dressing in layers also enables multiple functions for your clothing while reducing pack volume and weight in your gear.

The principle can be applied year-round, regardless of weather conditions and seasons. However, it becomes even more crucial the colder and windier it is. In our article 'Garphyttan Guide: The Layering Principle', you can read more about the different layers and their functions.

3. Protect Yourself from the Sun

"Summer hiking may involve exposure to the sun for extended periods. To protect yourself from harmful UV radiation, it's important to wear sun-protective clothing whenever possible, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a hat. If the heat doesn't permit long-sleeved shirts or long pants, it's essential to protect yourself with sunscreen instead. A minimum of SPF 30 is always recommended.

4. Customize Your Clothing for the Type of Hike

"Depending on the terrain and difficulty level, your clothing choices may vary. For easier hikes on well-maintained trails, you can opt for lighter and more breathable clothing, such as shorts and short-sleeved shirts. For more challenging terrain and longer hikes, you may need to consider wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts to protect yourself from vegetation, insect bites, and the sun's rays.

5. Don't Forget About Your Feet

When it comes to dressing right for hiking, it's essential not to forget about your feet. Avoid cotton socks and instead opt for socks made of wool or synthetic materials that breathe and wick moisture away. After a long hike, make sure to change into dry socks to prevent blisters and discomfort. Many hikers prefer to use double-layered socks to reduce the risk of blisters. Also, choose a pair of quality hiking boots that provide support and protection for your feet. By giving your feet the right attention and protection, you can enjoy a comfortable summer hike without discomfort or injuries.

Our clothing recommendations, layer by layer:

Layer 1: Base Layer

When it comes to underwear, we recommend clothing made of merino wool. Merino wool provides excellent warmth, doesn't itch, and stays fresh for several days without developing odors. Both underwear and bras are recommended in merino wool for their ability to stay fresh and comfortable.

When it comes to base layers, you have two options to choose from: merino wool and synthetic. Merino wool offers the same advantages as underwear, while synthetic is a more budget-friendly option that provides good breathability and insulation. Merino wool socks are also preferred as they stay fresh and help prevent blisters during the hike.

Layer 2: Mid-Layer

The mid-layer is crucial for insulating body heat and can be a lightweight fleece jacket, a thinner insulated jacket, or a shirt. Here, you also want some features like the ability to open and close zippers, use a hood, and adjust heat with drawstrings. Garphyttan's mid-layers are made of polyester or cotton. Polyester is a synthetic material that doesn't retain moisture within the fiber, providing excellent moisture-wicking properties. Cotton, on the other hand, absorbs moisture, making it work well in combination with a base layer of wool.

Layer 3: Outer Layer

The primary purpose of the outermost layer is to protect the underlying layers, which means you'll want garments that are versatile, durable, and provide protection against rain and wind. They should also be roomy and allow for good mobility. You can choose between a shell jacket that withstands both rain and wind or combine a windproof jacket with a separate rain jacket. It depends on your preferences and needs.

For the lower body, hiking pants are the best choice. They should protect against wind, mosquitoes, and light rain. In warm conditions, shorts can be used, but it's important to apply sunscreen and be more aware of mosquito and tick bites. At Garphyttan, we've developed the Specialist Gaiter Trouser, which is a zip-off model, offering a versatile option when you want to adapt your pants to the climate and terrain.

Layer 4: Reinforcement Layer

Reinforcement garments can be divided into two categories: those designed to protect against strong winds or prolonged wetness, and those meant to provide insulation. These layers are used more selectively when you want to feel comfortable during breaks, overnight stays, or in emergency situations. This may include extra socks, a hat, a scarf, a sweater, a jacket, or a pair of pants.
